Four Faces - Quadrophenia Reconstructed
Celebrating the 2011 release of The Who's Quadrophenia this week, BRYHNH

available now, by right clicking (Windows) or control clicking (Mac) HERE then selecting "save as."

Perry, great job! I remember thinking years ago how cool it would be to incorporate the King Biscuit Flower Hour concert of The Who into their original recording, and you have brought that to life and then some. Keep up the awesome work!
Perry responds:
I first recorded this King Biscuit Flower Hour show onto a Maxell C120 cassette (I still have it in the drawer next to my right elbow in Perry's World) in 1974, and have kept up on looking for better recordings since. And I think you will find this to be the best sounding, but more importantly, most complete version of the Quadrophenia portion of the show. The never did play it straight thru live in 1973. Just too difficult to pull off live with the level of pre-recorded tracks that needed to be manipulated by poor Bob Pridden (The Who's monitor mixer) who Pete quite often "made a straight man of." Listen closely to Pete giving him "what for" before the start of "Doctor Jimmy." Legendary . . .

Had some iTunes issues so I burned the lossless version to a DVD first and played that through clean and flat the first time Wednesday afternoon prepping Thanksgiving dinner. Outstanding, but Track 23 Love Reign was exceptional. Played it again with some EQ that works for my house and it is just Brilliant. Took me back to jr year of high school after being sent home for blowing up the science lab with Bob Hill. At the time we thought the 8-track and Jensen speakers were so cool. Nice little surprise, just before Christmas Mr. Bax.

Would you be kind enough to list the sources and dates (for the live tracks) for each track?
Thanks a million for this... amazing stuff!!
Perry responds:
The live show tracks are the Quadrophenia section, from December 4, 1973, The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA
Rmonio says:
01/13/2012
This has alot of the Who's live broadcast on King Biscuit - something we used to hear in the 70's on KQRS in Mpls... I wish I still had my old cassettes of that and the live Floyd they played (original club first playing of OOTDs). Sigh - thanks for bringing back excellent memories, Perry!
Perry responds:
Robert, BRYHNH has your back. This contains the most complete and best sounding version of the center Qudrophenia section of the 12.4.73 show from Philly that most often King Biscuit only played edited versions of. I do still have my old cassette of that broadcast (a Maxell UD C-120, directly in front of me on the studio desk, which is not the source used on this show,) and have quite frequently played other selection from that show on BRYHNH. So bottom line, I got you covered if you never turn up your old cassette and then some.
Oh, and I am relatively sure I have that version of "One Of These Days", as well. If memory serves me, that was originally broadcast on the BBC.
Stay tuned . . .
:-)

Perry, this was a thoroughly enjoyable interview with Steve. It was relaxed, yet had some depth that I as a Genephile just gobbled up.
Another thing, the 2007 remasters of the Genesis catalog are magnificent. I always disliked the muddled mixes from the pre-Abacab period, and this remaster series just blows me the F away.
Same goes for the Jethro Tull remasters, but I reiterate my raves when the proper time comes.
Thanks again for your show.

Just discovered this website. Very professional production. Any reason The Ramones haven't been played? There would be no U2, Clash or Green Day without them.
Perry Responds:
A search shows you might be right, which really defies my logic, in that quite often I need a shorty song to flush out a show. And defies logic as you point out as their great position in the history of the genre. Thanks for pointing that out, Mars. A situation that bears correcting . . .

Yeah, that would be me, Soren. But it would have been all those years across the park at The Pace, as opposed to the Lamoine Hotel. One of the tragedy's of rock and roll was the Change of Pace meeting the wrecking ball . . .

Another classic Perry, tell me,where the hell did you get the Todd track? Ive been listening to him for 38 years & I ain't ever heard that one before.
Perry responds:
Stef,
Well I am sure you have heard the finished version, that appeared on the first M. Frog (Labat) record? Incredibly rare for years (as was the first Roger Powell album "Cosmic Furnace") but now both re-issued.
The Todd demo is for the unreleased album "Froggy Goes A Pumpkin." If you know anything about Todd's multi-instrumental prowess, it is clearly Todd on drums. And he takes the song writing credit, while Labat takes it on the TR recorded solo M. Frog album.
Here's more:
"The first unreleased album "Froggy Went A Pumpkin!" is a collection of ten demo's Rundgren made for and together with M. Frog Labat, the French synth-player appearing on Todd Rundgren's Utopia (1974). The tracks, recorded in 1973, perfectly display the simple but solid rockbeat sound of that time: get the house rockin'! With M. Frog Labat, leaving his synths behind and doing the groaning, barking and screaming and Todd rocking the guitar a bigger contrast with the first Utopia album is hardly imaginable. I wonder if Todd also played the drums, as The Nippon Crown commentary suggests, it wouldn't surprise me if it were Kevin Ellman.

Is it wrong to suggest that you SHOULD BE left alone? Glad to see you stopped the FIVE SONG podcast and went all the way to SEVEN...Vangelis to Rage to Bruford to Todd: CHECKMATE!
Thanks again Perry
Rick from NY says:

What??? No Steve Martin??? Guess it would undermine the seriousness of Swinging Erudites . . .
Perry responds:
Both "King Tut" and "Walk Like an Egyptian" would have been expected and predictable (and thus ridiculed by Bob D.)
Swinging Erudites?
Now that is left of the dial . . .
Shawn says:
02/03/2011
On Sahara of Snow, Does Alan Holdsworth channel Robert Fripp? I think Bruford was in both bands, yes? ...And Yes?
Perry responds:
All correct Shawn. After leaving Yes, Bruford joined forces with Robert Fripp for King Crimson "Mach III." After the last hurrah of that band (Red,) John Wetton and Bruford teamed up with ex Roxy/Zappa keyboard/violinist Eddie Jobson, and ex Gong/Soft Parade guitarist Allan Holdsworth to form the prog supergroup U.K.
As i mentioned, "Sahara Of Snow" was a staple of the U.K. live show, destined for their second record. But with the disintegration of egos, and the exodus of Bruford and Holdsworth, "Sahara of Snow" ended up on the Bruford solo record "One Of A Kind" with Holdsworth once again on guitar.
Holdsworth was not replaced in U.K. and ex Zappa drummer Terry Bozzio took over on drums. That band released "Danger Money" followed by a live album and U.K members dispersed into a number of bands including Jethro Tull, Asia, Missing Persons and solo projects . . .

Vol. 150 | 01.15.2011
NEW FOR JANUARY 15, 2011
For the fifth time, Rick From New York has wrangled the controls of BRYHNH to compile the best tracks from all the episodes from 2010 into the annual Rick's Picks year in review.
And for the fifth year, Rick has nailed it.
And this year, without drama.
He gave me the good list straight off . . .
:-)
Here's what Rick had to say this year:
OK . . . so it wasn't the worst year in the history of the world. As Dave Barry aptly points out,
"There have been MUCH worse years. For example, toward the end of the Cretaceous Period, Earth was struck by an asteroid that wiped out about 75 percent of all of the species on the planet. "
. . . that year was worse.
But even a cursory overview of the events of 2010, however, makes for some unsettling reading. Without even touching on Politics and World Affairs, which have been "year-ended" to death (and are SUPER DEPRESSING!), let's just take Pop Culture for instance . . .
Television- The Returning Champion of the Vapid Wasteland.
People, there is nothing on . . . don't debate me on this, just put down the clicker and go outside or something.
Books- Jonathan Franzen's "Freedom."
The most beloved (see Oprah) book of the year turns out to be about...Nothing.
Film- (Coen Bros., special category . . . doesn't count.)
Otherwise, Oscar Buzz is furiously buzzing for Buzz Lightyear 3-3D, with the runner-up being a movie about a rich, white Royal Guy who overcomes a speech impediment (Oh, the Humanity!).
Music-
There is always great music being produced year after year, but what rises to the top is rarely the cream. Witness Taylor Swift and Susan Boyle.
WWW-
I'm sure there are marvelous things being done on the Internet, but it's hard to imagine that they are happening on Facebook or Twitter.
"OMG . . .had awesome Tex-Mex, headed for the toilet now...I'm just sayin'"
And what do you suppose all the massively high-tech computing resources and uber-smart people of Google have enabled us to access through their amazing search engine as the top searches of 2010? Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Chatroulette.
However . . .
Standing in stark contrast, BRYHNH listeners had a fabulous year, with a smokin' new website, BRYHNH Merchandise and the unflagging attention to detail provided by Mr. Bax and the boys that we have all come to expect . I'll tell you, it sure gives me something to look forward to in 2011 . . .
Hell, I might even buy a T-Shirt . . .
Rick From New York
And without further ado. I proudly present to you:

The week was difficult, 22" of snow in CT Wednesday piled on top of the 17" day after Christmas and a "sprinkling" of 6" in between. Canceled flights reducing two days work...into one and another canceled flight with connections and middle seats...But It's the 15th PODCAST Time and with Perry recovering from the 'Delirium' of the last show...Rick has graciously delivered another classic...Gentlemen I humbly, thank you. Rick I have t-shirt I need to order the BRYHNH hat !

I love the alternative versions of The Waiting Room which are know as The Evil Jam. Live versions of the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway take me to another world. Your old show Music To Be Murdered By aired the high quality bootleg Awed Man Out which was their LLDOB tour and performed at Wembley in 1975 shortly before Peter Gabriel left Genesis.
