Nice one again Perry, although the into threw me for a while ! Its good weather for staying in and listening to good music-18 inches of snow here in sunny Scotland at the moment and it doesnt look like letting up in the near future !
Nice to hear King Crimson and Tangerine Dream-a nice "blast" from the past.

Something special? There is station in Wasila (sp) Alaska that plays Jobson and Crimson all the time...plus the Russians can listen...they are our neighbors.

fantastic show- from the opening guitar crunches of the young EC ("aneeeeethesisze") to a band i had never heard of, Damsel Down, who i have subsequently listened to on their various web spots-- WOW PERRY-- this truly is the best radio i have never heard because unlike most post adolescent college type "alternate but still uses Clearasil" podcasts or streams that might have some of this material in the "mainstream form," on your show i hear different takes. Songs from my own past that i have not heard in years or fresh sounds from daft punks- believe me, standing on a crowded train platform waiting the next SBahn & hearing Tangerine Dream is not only uplifting, it's surreal. Thank you for all the great shows & keep 'em coming!

Hi Perry,
Just wanted to say “thank you” again for all the effort you put into getting us new music twice every month. I have spent the last month in my cabin in northern Wisconsin, no electricity, no running water, no indoor plumbing but with your music, my mp3 player, some external speakers and a bunch of rechargeable batteries…it is just like home. You do a great job and I just want to say “thank you” again.
Also I saw Roger Waters do the WALL twice, Minneapolis was the best show I think I have ever seen and this past week I saw Furthur TWICE…and just bought tickets for Furthur in San Francisco this New Years…truly a great show for us old Deadheads. (in MPLS they opened with Maggies Farm and closed with Like a Rolling Stone….either of which would be a great selection for one of your podcasts – I bought the CD of the show so if you want it let me know)

Unfortunately, I've heard much of this music on the radio before ... on the left end of the dial. So, labeling this as The Best Radio You Never Heard is a mistake. Free form radio has been playing this stuff for a long time. And, significantly less than all the major label artists you are playing. Tom Petty "Refugee" ... gee, they play that on corporate rock radio. I could go on and comment on each track, but your playlist is just a slice of commercial radio ... and not very far from what is heard on the right end of the dial. Maybe a mix worthy of the left end of the dial would be more appropriate for the name "Best Radio You Never Heard Before" ... 'cos this stuff ain't music I've never heard before.
Perry responds:
Obviously read the playlist and couldn't have been bothered to listen.
Bravo . . .
psychtech says:
11/21/2010
Bob: It you don't like it, don't listen. Perry's mixes are just right for exercise, reading, road trips or just relaxing. I recommend this podcast to all my friends and even to people I don't like. It's just that good.
Bevo says:
11/21/2010
Bob D,
Please don't even try to tell me you've heard the versions of these songs played before while driving in your Ford Focus. Or are you one of those music snobs? Music snobbery is a debilitating condition, but don't worry it can be treated if spotted early. BTW the Beatles were better than the stones. I myself am not a snob .. I just have better taste in music than most people.
GrooveWizard says:
11/21/2010
Judged solely on his uninformed commentary, Bob's apparently unable to put the crack pipe down long enough to actually LISTEN to this show... Having been a featured INDEPENDENT artist on this podcast, I can assure you that this is as far from corporate anything as it gets! Grow up and get real Bob...
Mike Higgi says:
11/21/2010
Bob, the fact that you still listen to radio tells me all that I need to know. I gave up FM many years ago when I decided to not subject my hi fidelity audio system to any more commercials. I have been listening to Perry's podcast since 2007, and what I find is unique is the podcasts themes, the unique covers and alternative cuts, and the cool transitions from one track to the next. Keep up the good work, Perry. I recommend your podcast to everyone that loves good music.
Michael Levin says:
11/21/2010
Bob D. . . . yours is such an odd comment. I understand the argument you're making, but to me it seems wildly off the mark. As the owner of thousands of records [remember those?] and thousands of CD's [I can stop anytime I want to -- I just don't want to] I listen to BRYHNH and am consistently surprised by the mixture of interesting / unusual / compelling and rarely heard versions of songs I may have heard in other, more familiar versions, or of songs I have never heard by groups and artists who get little or no airplay in traditional formats. Perry . . . keep up the great work.
Keith Droz says:
11/21/2010
Hey Bob,
I'm not sure what radio station you're listening to but you might want to clue the rest of us in on it. Living in the NYC area i can safely say that the radio out here blows (and that's being kind).
One of the things i am always most amazed is at the eclectic mix of tunes that Perry manages to muster podcast after podcast. There is such a wealth of music out there that is not being heard. and it's not just the oddball bands or the new music. It may be an alternate take of a song that we all know or a remix or a live version....all in all it is in fact the best radio you have never heard. Because frankly I've never heard this stuff on the radio. And if you find such a radio station let us know....but chances are you're not going to.
Maybe not every song is a winner in your eyes but you cannot deny that Perry has managed to capture something very interesting in his podcasts. When's the last time you've heard King Crimson or UK on the radio. I've yet to hear any station around by me play anything form the new Elton John/Leon Russel CD...
Oh yeah....even XM blows too. i got rid of it after 6 months. Springsteen was right....135 channels and nothing on. you might want to go back to the BRYHNH archives and give some of the older podcasts a listen. I'm sure you'll be recanting your statement soon enough.
Si says:

Where do you live? I am from UK and believe me there's no radio station playing anything like this at any side of the dial.
Thanks Perry, another interesting podcast, I especially loved the Jam and Sir Paul.
Mickey in Arkansas says:
11/21/2010
If you don't like it don't listen. The titles may be familiar but the versions quite often are unfamiliar. I had never heard that version of "Refugee" until here. Makes me want to find it now. Live tracks, covers, alternate takes, all make me take another look at the old familiars. I, too, have been listening since at least 2007 and have heard every episode Perry has posted. Some several times. I look forward to each new one. Keep them coming.
Bill Donnelly says:
11/21/2010
Bob D. your comments are a little off..and perhaps you just do not get the point. The tracks on BRYHNH in my view, are for folks who have tired of getting their music in traditional fashion-i.e listening to several radio stations and looking for something new and those who really Know their music and are looking for a special version or live version. Finally, I look for new artists and combinations of artists that are outside of the commercial realm. (I actually posed this question on the discussion boards)
I did not get the new Tom Petty Damn the Torpedos record, nor the remix of 1985 from Band on the Run and am candidly happy to learn they are out here. Perhaps you need some time to adjust to the podcast and its unique presentation, Maybe you are exposed to every music genre and have heard it all before. I would be interested to to know what "radio" you are listening to on the left side of your dial that stack up against this show...public and college radio stations are OK...but widely inconsistent ..Is it possible you are having a bad day Bob D?

Christopher Prince says:

Bob - Commercial Radio? If that was the case, the podcast would contain at least 45 minutes of BS and commercials (and songs wouldn't go over 3 1/2 minutes) Hey, let me know what stations play stuff like this - I thought they were all extinct.
John Vernon says:

Leonora Criswell Evergreen Colorado says:

I thoroughly enjoy Perry's site and look forward to hearing what he has put together....I find it far superior to anything on the dial....I also love the relevance to current events and his always humors spin! I do not perceive myself as a musical snob but I do know what I like! I have and will continue to recommend this site to all who appreciate music that cannot be found on the radio! Thank you once again Perry, your efforts are truly appreciated!

Bob D is talking through his arse ! That Tom Petty track has never been played on any radio station this side of the pond(Ive never heard that mix before-its totally different to both the album and single mix) Keep up the good work Perry, you know what they say "you can please some of the people some of the time"Theres no pleasing some folks-theyre all different mixes any-way so whats the problem ?
Stormy Strong says:

Hey Perry, I wouldn't lend too much creedence to the comments of "Bob" it would appear he doesn't quite grasp the concept of the (free) service you are providing.
If he is looking for something never once played on mainstream then I may suggest that pan pipes and nose flutes FM may be where he should do his listening.
It is his right to voice his opinion and discontent and it is your right to ignore his pompous Ass and continue with what is obviously a popular (again I say FREE!! ) radio show!!

Joey Mac says:

Here's my guess...someone...BOB, probably took a look at the playlist and jumped to a conclusion before even trying to listen to what Mr. Bax does for us. If thats the case, a woeful injustice to what Perry does for us was done. Its not the playlist pal, but the podcast that makes BRYHNH unique.
Back in the day...before Perry's comments on the casts, before the playlists, it was always an adventure of what you might hear...maybe not a new song, but songs coupled that you would never hear on radio at least on the same station...like Rush (not a favorite of mine), Sinatra, and Jamey Johnson (a favorite of mine). Perry told me once that that a good song is a good song and it doesn't matter where it gets played. Bob you probably don't have the courage to admit that Michael Jackson is worthy of air play. Perry does.
And what the heck is this right vs left dial crap?
P - keep it up buddy!

From 'Refugee'...to 'The Refugee'...throwing in Elvis' new 'National Ransom' (which kills), all the way through to the 'Book of Saturdays,' and the Stones' 'You Got the Silver'...You have such a great feeling for 1 - 12 (or 14, or 15, whatever the case may be)...Always the perfect selection of tunes...in the Perfect order!
Thank You Perry!

No point in piling on. Bob missed the first 145 volumes of BRYHNH in addition to the latest PB masterwork. There is plenty of music in the universe that I don't get either, but will at least listen first before commenting. We've all had verbal and written "observations" for which we'd gladly accept a Mulligan, right?
Perry, you, in addition to your podcast, ARE the best. Heartfelt thanks for your labor of love and the many great hours of musical joy, enlightenment and surprise.

Wow! Bob D got everybody's juices flowing, eh? After the thumpin' he got here I expect we won't hear from him until the next hiatus of the "Never-ending Tour". BTW Perry this one is for the HoF...
John Carson, in Macomb Il. says:
11/22/2010
I don't know what radio station "Bob" is listening to, but it certainly is NOT down here in my part of the midwest. There may be some low power "Hobbyist" free FM radio station playing an eclectic mix, but I'm not hearing it 'round here. There are some free form radio stations playing a little bit of everything, but NOT the hard to find "one-off" alternate takes, live versions, independents, regional bands, and eclectic mixes that work well together.
Bob doesn't realize the hard work and thought process that Perry uses to create a show. I have been there at the renowned Perry's World studio when the magic is happening. These aren't a thrown together mis-mosh of commercial radio crap or stuff off of a CD. The music comes from many sources, and expertly mixed by Perry. I have seen him spend 30 minutes debating how to mix one song in to another.
Sorry Bob, you're way off. You won't find this anywhere else.
Bill Donnelly says:
11/23/2010

I have traveled the US and the world for the last 30 years and I am not finding the stations you are listening to. In the past there have been glimpses in Chicago, LA, St. Louis and the of course some pirate radio in LA and the UK. But recently, in the US, really? Even internet radio seems to be theme or artist focused with nice selections but little diversity. Send us the 411 on the stations you are listening to so we have an alternative in case Perry slips "Freebird" in again.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't download this podcast using 'save target as', nor can I listen to more than the first 5 seconds.
Perry Responds:
Reg,
Are you using the download link (as opposed to the show title link) in the upper right hand portion on the show entry?
I just did a test download, control clicked (Mac speak. in Windows it would be a right click) clicked Save Link As . . ." and the whole show downloaded in less than 30 seconds at 2.4 mbps.
And in as far as play back, you are only getting 5 seconds using the player on the page.?
And just to be clear, you are seeing the brand new BRYHNH web page?
There have been places where the propagation is still not complete, as we not only redesigned and launched the new web site, but also change web host servers to a more pro Virtual Private Server, hence the fantastic download speed.
Keep Me posted . . .

Found this by accident, and loving it. Gotta admit I had never heard any of the versions I just listened to! I do have one feature request for your iTunes podcast… can you add chapters please? If I want to listen to the same track again and again it would make it much easier rather than trying to guess where it started (which is a bit like days with cassettes, rewind… too far… fwd… oops…rewind…damn…fwd…) Keep up the good work.

Ok, off the subject of the music and on the subject of the title/theme of this podcast. Your pic appears to have an old photo of immigrants staring at the Statue of Liberty at Ellis Island. Hardly the same thing as "illegals" living in this country illegally and expecting tax payers to take care of their families. The millions of immigrants back in the day (my grandparents included), were happy to learn English, sign the book and respect this great land. They didn't sneak in. They worked very hard (for very little), to build a life for themselves here. Like I said, hardly the same as these "illegals", jumping the wall and avoiding citizenship. Just thought I'd make that clear. Thanks.
Mickey in Arkansas says:

I meant to comment on this one a couple weeks ago and forgot to come by. As I was listening I thought you missed the obvious "Illegal Aliens." But I'll take early live "Musical Box" instead any time.

"If only St. Patrick would drive the green wearing booger eating morons out of my neighborhood every March . . ."
Yeah, usually it's NOT the Irish who are the green-wearin', drunk assholes on St. Patty's. We don't see the point in mocking the green and acting like A-holes (especially on OUR holiday).

It was good hearing the Rodrigo y Gabriela cut. I have recently discovered them and have enjoyed them immensely. I have listened to a lot of their stuff in the past 4-6 weeks. And Hendrix is always a welcome listen. Thanks.

Vol. 126 | 01.15.2010
NEW FOR JANUARY 15, 2010
For the fourth time, Rick From New York has wrangled the controls of BRYHNH to compile the best tracks from all the episodes from 2009 into the annual Rick's Pix year in review.
And for the fourth year, Rick has knocked it out of the park.
But this year, not without drama.
Rick From New York is getting pretty good at this, and with good comes cocky.
Here's what Rick had to say this year:
I sent my "Best Of . . ." to Perry early because of a premonition. I knew what he would say . . .
Not only did he inauspiciously and brutally reject it, he said,"You have somehow managed to omit everything that makes the show unique; the unexpected live cuts, the oddball covers, the "Sucker Punch" (right song, right place) and all but stripped the colors from the palette that is BRYHNH." I briefly tried to make a case for my maligned masterpiece, but I soon realized that I was wasting my breath.
Then, just when my spirits had sunk to the depths of despair, Perry spoke the cleansing, healing phrase, "I think you have a better show in you."
Check and see . . .
Well, I remember using the words "connective tissue" and asked for a re-write.
A few days passed and when the re-write arrived, I realized I had been played for a sap.
It was obvious. Plain as the nose on my face. Rick had set me up and first sent me a "fugazi." He did have a better show in him. It was in his back pocket the whole time! It had to be.
Because no one could put a great show like this together, and have concocted his "maligned masterpiece" without purposely having his way with me.
Bastard !
Like I said, with good comes cocky . . .
And without further ado. I proudly present to you:

John Bax says:

Regarding "Dead Girls of London", Van Morrison recorded a version of it, before Zappa, then thought twice about releasing it.
It's out there somewhere.
I've heard it.
Perry responds:
Yes, I mentioned that Warren Zevon also sang it but yes, it was Van Morrison's record company that put a stop to his version as well.
Mike Higgi says:

Perry, that Bread song was a real throw back for us old timers. Thanks for the memories.
Perry responds:
Ya know Mike, I was hesitant to play it because . . . well it was Bread. But then I started listening to a few of their other tracks, and they really have a pile of really well written songs. Some more schmaltzy than others, but really good songs just the same. It comes right down to my basic principal of music and the show.
A good song is a good song, and I don't really care that an indie hipster might scoff or not. If it's good, and it fits, it gets played.
It's really that simple in the end . . .
